Joel Soriano Named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

St. John’s senior center earns fifth weekly honor of the season after posting 21 points and nine rebounds in win over Villanova
QUEENS, N.Y. – After recording 21 points and nine rebounds in a 70-50 win over Villanova at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, Red Storm graduate student Joel Soriano earned his fifth BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection of the season, as announced by the conference on Monday.
The 6-foot-11 center from Yonkers, N.Y., scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half to help lead St. John's (13-7, 5-4 BIG EAST) to a season sweep of the Wildcats. Soriano sank 8-of-9 (88.9%) shot attempts while also going 5-of-7 from free-throw line in his seventh 20-point performance of the season.
Soriano ranks among the national leaders in several statistical categories, averaging 9.7 rebounds per game (21st in NCAA), including 3.9 offensive boards per contest (10th in NCAA). The Red Storm's big man also leads the BIG EAST averaging 9.4 rebounds in conference play.
Soriano ranks ninth in Division I shooting 63.5 percent from the field. Against BIG EAST opponents, Soriano is tied for the league lead with Creighton's Ryan Kalkbrenner, shooting 59.5 percent from the floor.
The Johnnies will return to action on Wednesday visiting Xavier for a 6:30 p.m. ET matchup at Cintas Center. FS1 will carry the national telecast.
