The Brooklyn native becomes first Johnnie since Julian Champagnie in 2021 to earn the recognition
QUEENS, N.Y. – With the 2024-25 campaign starting in less than a week, St. John's guard Kadary Richmond was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I Player of the Year Preseason Watch List, as announced by the organization on Wednesday.
Â
Richmond is the first Johnnie to be named to the preseason watch list since current San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie earned the recognition in 2021. The Brooklyn product is also one of four BIG EAST players to be selected, joining UConn's Alex Karaban, Creighton's Ryan Kalkbrenner and Marquette's Kam Jones.
Â
The 2024 All-BIG EAST First Team selection averaged career highs of 15.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game at Seton Hall last year, starting 34 of 35 appearances for the Pirates. Richmond also posted 31 double-digit scoring performances, including 12 20-point outings.
Â
Richmond guided the Pirates to the program's second NIT title, finishing with a 21-point, 13-rebound double-double in the team's 79-77 championship game victory over Indiana State on April 4. The NIT All-Tournament Team selection averaged 13.8 points to go with a team-best 9.4 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 2.6 steals per game in five starts during the team's title run. For his efforts, Richmond was also named to the 2024 NABC All-District First Team and All-Met First Team.
Â
St. John's opens the 2024-25 campaign on Monday, Nov. 4, when Fordham visits Carnesecca Arena for a 6:30 p.m. showdown. The Red Storm and Rams will square off for the 91st time in a rivalry that dates back to 1909. The Johnnies cruised to a 77-55 victory over Fordham at MSG Holiday Festival in the last meeting on Dec. 16, 2023.
