The Asabi-Kumasi, Ghana native earns team captain status alongside Zuby Ejiofor and Kadary Richmond
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 25, 2024) – Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and St. John's Head Coach Rick Pitino announced on Monday that junior forward Sadiku Ibine Ayo has been named the team's third co-captain for the 2024-25 campaign.
Â
"Sadiku exemplifies every quality we want in a St. John's man – selfless and team first," said Pitino.
Â
Ibine Ayo joins Zuby Ejiofor and Kadary Richmond as the trio of co-captains for the Johnnies this season. The Asabi-Kumasi, Ghana entered his third season under Pitino's guidance, playing one year at Iona (2022-23) before joining the Hall of Famer in Queens last season.
Â
The 6-foot-6 junior forward battled back from a season ending injury last year and made his 2024-25 debut in a win over Fordham on Nov. 4, recording three points and a pair of rebounds.
Â
Ibine Ayo has played in five of the team's seven games this season while providing energy to the program both on and off the court. The newest co-captain is shooting 60.0 percent (3-5 3FG) from distance this season, including a pair of makes in the team's 80-55 victory over Virginia on Friday. Ibine Ayo finished with six points in the winning effort over the Cavaliers, the most since his arrival in Queens.
Â
Prior to St. John's, Ibine Ayo helped lead Iona to the 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title. He averaged 6.5 points in the MAAC Tournament semifinal and championship games to help the Gaels secure a berth in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
Â
St. John's will return to action on Saturday when the Johnnies host Ivy League opponent Harvard inside Carnesecca Arena. Tip-off from Queens is slated for 5 p.m. on Peacock. Following the game, fans are welcome to attend a free autograph session with Red Storm players courtesy of Flat Top Fund and Storm Marketing collectives.
