Dombroski joins Hall of Fame Head Coach Lou Carnesecca as the only St. John’s members to receive the “Good Guy” honor
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Athletics' Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Relations Stephen Dombroski will receive the Mike Cohen "Good Guy" Award, presented by the Met Basketball Writers Association (MBWA), at the 91st annual All-Met Haggerty Awards dinner scheduled for Thursday, April 18, at the Sleepy Hollow Hotel & Conference Center in Tarrytown, N.Y.
Dombroski will become just the second St. John's member to earn the "Good Guy" Award, joining Hall of Fame Head Coach Lou Carnesecca, who earned the recognition in 1992 after retiring from his coaching duties. It also marks the second-straight year a St. John's executive staff member will be honored at the MBWA's marquee event as former Deputy Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator Kathleen Meehan received the Career Achievement Award prior to her retirement.
The Latham, N.Y., native, who has spent nearly a decade with the Red Storm, is a member of the athletic department's executive staff and in his role oversees the media relations and publicity for the department's 17 varsity athletic teams while serving as the primary contact for men's basketball. As Senior Associate Athletic Director, he is also responsible for managing the department's advertising, branding, creative services, marketing, multimedia and the St. John's University Television Network (SJU-TV).
In his role at St. John's, Dombroski serves as a lead contact for external operations with Red Storm Athletic partners, such as FOX Sports, LEARFIELD, Madison Square Garden and Nike.
Dombroski has assisted with media relations at the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship for 12 years (2003-2011, 2014, 2017, 2023) and the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship in Trenton, N.J. in 2006. He also served as a Media Coordinator for the 2017 and 2023 NCAA Men's Basketball East Regionals at Madison Square Garden.
The MBWA's "Good Guy" Award is named in memory of Mike Cohen, former head of sports information at NBC Sports and Manhattan College, and former publicity director at Yonkers Raceway. Cohen also was a consultant to Fordham University and operated his own public relations firm prior to his untimely passing in 1988 at the age of 44. Anyone involved in college basketball is eligible for this award; the only criteria is that they --- male or female --- be a "Good Guy."
