St. John’s Names Annie Kambouras Cheerleading Head Coach

Alexa Pope will join the staff as an assistant coach
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's Athletic Department announced Annie Kambouras as the new cheerleading head coach and Alexa Pope as an assistant coach on Tuesday.
Kambouras, a 2021 graduate of Hofstra, was a four-year member of the Pride cheerleading squad during her time as an undergraduate. She served as a captain and received the team's Dedication Award during her senior season.
Kambouras is set to take over for Carolyn Renda, who spent 13 years at the helm of the Red Storm cheerleading program.
Throughout her tenure with Hofstra, the cheerleading program organized cheer clinics to mentor and teach aspiring cheerleaders. The program was also involved on campus, participating in a number of community walks, open houses and events on Hofstra's campus.
As a member of the Pride, the Queens native helped lead Hofstra to two United Cheerleading Association (UCA) National Championships in 2019 and 2021.
Upon graduation, Kambouras worked in various roles as a cheer coach. She served as an acro dance instructor at Christina's Dance Unlimited as well as the varsity cheerleading head coach at St. Francis Prep High School in Fresh Meadows since 2021. Starting in 2022, she worked as an assistant teacher at Stars Academy Pre-School in Whitestone, N.Y., instructing small group activities and supervising students throughout the school day.
Pope graduated from Fairfield in May of 2024 with a bachelor's degree in marketing and management. Pope was a four-year member of the Stags' cheerleading team, serving as a captain during her senior season. Throughout her time with the team, the Stags made appearances at the NCA College Nationals in Daytona, Fla., competing in the Division I All-Girl Advanced category.
Pope also cheered in two NCAA Tournament games for the Fairfield women's basketball team in 2022 and 2024
Throughout her 14-years competitive cheerleading career, Pope won a UCA High School National Championship and a UCA World School Cheerleading Championship title. From 2017-2022, the Bronxville, N.Y., product coached for the Tuckahoe Tigers Youth Organization, leading them to two UCA World School Cheerleading Championships.
The hiring committee for the cheerleading coach was chaired by Senior Associate Athletic Director / Senior Woman Administrator Kristin Quinn. She was joined on the committee by Former Cheerleading Head Coach Carolyn Renda, Dance Team Head Coach Christine McCarton, Assistant Athletic Trainer Sydney Halligan and Director of Marketing and Promotions Alex Hromada.
