Luis Jr. becomes first St. John’s player to earn the award since Joel Soriano on Nov. 28, 2022
NEW YORK– Following his 30-point performance on Saturday night and leading St. John's to back-to-back conference wins, RJ Luis Jr. was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday.
The junior becomes the first St. John's player to earn the award since Joel Soriano on Nov. 28, 2022. He becomes just the third Johnnie in the last five years to garner the accolade.
Luis Jr. averaged 24.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and shot 84.6 percent from the charity stripe (22-26) in a 2-0 week, where the Red Storm defeated Xavier and Villanova, both by double-digits.
The Miami, Fla., native has recorded three-straight double-doubles and is tied with teammate Zuby Ejiofor for the BIG EAST lead in that category with six. The junior is averaging 17.4 points per game, which ranks top-five in the league.
Under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, Luis Jr. delivered a memorable 30-point, 10-rebound performance to guide St. John's past Villanova, 80-68. The wing became the first St. John's player to score 30-plus since former Johnnie and current San Antonio Spur Julian Champagnie netted 31 against Butler on Feb. 18, 2022.
The junior went 16-for-20 (80%) from the free throw line, marking the most made free throws by a St. John's player since Marcus Hatten made a program-record 21 on Feb. 9, 2002, against UConn. The junior's 16 makes from the charity stripe tie for fourth-most in program history and eighth most in NCAA Division I this season.
On Tuesday in Cincinnati, the 6-foot-7 wing tallied a double-double of 18 points and 10 boards to pace the Johnnies past Xavier, 82-72. Luis Jr. shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in a tough road environment at the Cintas Center.
Luis Jr. has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll three times this season on Nov. 11, Nov. 18 and Dec. 2. During his freshman season at UMass in 2022-23, the rookie garnered Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors three times.
