St. John’s Outlasted at Seton Hall, 57-48

Ber’Nyah Mayo led all scorers with 18 points on Saturday afternoon
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The St. John's women's basketball team fell at Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon, 57-48.
The Red Storm (11-9, 1-8 BIG EAST) held a nine-point lead in the third quarter but were outlasted in the final frame by the Pirates (14-5, 6-2 BIG EAST) at Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, N.J.
Ber'Nyah Mayo finished the day matching a season-high 18 points to lead all scorers on 7-of-14 shooting for the Red Storm. The graduate student has reached double-digits in scoring in 12 of her last 15 appearances.
Lashae Dwyer filled up the box score adding eight points, eight boards and a game-high four assists in the Garden State.
The Red Storm controlled the glass outrebounding the Pirates, 37-27. The rebounding total marked the squad's second highest this season and most since it pulled down 39 against Marist on Nov. 21. Four players logged six rebounds or more in Saturday's setback- Phoenix Gedeon (8), Dwyer (8), Nevaeh Wingate (7), which marked a career-high and Kylie Lavelle (6).
In the early going, Mayo launched a dart to a streaking Lavelle for the easy lay-in on the break for the Johnnies' first made field goal. Seton Hall scored the next six points to take a 9-3 edge. Owen and Dwyer finished buckets in paint. Wingate made a second chance bucket on the putback to make it a two-point game, 11-9. Seton Hall held a 15-11 lead after the opening 10 minutes. St. John's controlled the glass outrebounding the Pirates, 14-6.
In the second stanza, Mayo nailed a step-back jumper at 8:49. The Pirates remained in front despite a triple from Mayo. After Seton Hall took its largest lead to that point, 24-17 with 3:52 remaining the second stanza, the Johnnies rattled off a 7-0 run over the final 1:11 of the opening half. Mayo drove to the bucket and banked in a falling lay-up as the buzzer sounded to knot the score at 24 heading into the locker room.
Heading into the third, the Red Storm took its first lead of the game after Mayo got the lay-up to fall at 8:46 mark. The Johnnies expanded its advantage by getting hot from beyond-the-arc. Mayo and Jailah Donald made a pair of crucial 3-pointers just 1:05 apart. Lavelle buried a corner triple as St. John's lead expanded to its largest of day, 39-30. Seton Hall quickly responded with an 8-0 run to jump right back into it. In a one-point game, St. John's had the final possession of the frame, Mayo once again got the buzzer-beating lay-in to go as the Johnnies carried a three-point edge, 41-38, into the final 10 minutes.
In the fourth, the Johnnies got a quick bucket, as Dwyer winded way her way to the rim on the quarter's first possession, 43-38. The Pirates swung right back after that turning the tides by rattling off a 14-0 scoring stretch to make a nine-point advantage midway through the fourth. Mayo finally ended the run with a lay-up after a 7:16 scoring drought. Skye Owen flushed a corner triple in the final 30 seconds to cut the deficit to six, 54-48, but it was too much to overcome as Seton Hall captured the 90th ever meeting between the schools.
The Red Storm will return to Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday night to face Providence at 7 p.m. The contest will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
