Luis Jr. averaged 19.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in back-to-back wins over top-20 opponents
QUEENS, N.Y. – After leading the No. 12/10 St. John's men's basketball team (21-3, 12-1 BIG EAST) to back-to-back wins over No. 11/11 Marquette and No. 19/18 UConn, RJ Luis Jr. was named BIG EAST Player of the Week and NCAA March Madness National Player of the Week on Monday.

Luis garnered the honors after averaging 19.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks per game as the Johnnies win streak ballooned to 10 games, the second longest active streak in NCAA Division I.

In Tuesday's 70-64 win over No. 11/11 Marquette, the junior finished with his seventh double-double of the season, putting up a 17-point and 11-rebound performance. Additionally, Luis was stout defensively against the Golden Eagles, tallying a career-high three blocks and matching a season-best four steals in 40 minutes of action.

On Friday, the Miami native delivered his seventh 20-plus point performance of the season to guide St. John's past No. 19/18 UConn, 68-62. Luis finished with team-high's of 21 points and seven rebounds as the Johnnies won their first game at Gampel Pavilion with fans in attendance since 2000. The Miami native proved clutch down the stretch scoring eight points over the final 2:16, including a crucial baseline jumper with 10.1 remaining to put the Red Storm up four and help seal a pivotal victory.

Luis ranks fourth in the BIG EAST averaging 17.6 points per game and has finished in double-figures in 23 of 24 appearances this season. He also ranks sixth in the league logging 6.8 rebounds per game and has tallied seven or more boards in nine of his last 10 contests.

The conference's player of the week honor marks the second of the season for Luis, as he was honored on Jan. 13 after a 30-point performance against Villanova. He has been named to the league's weekly honor roll four times this season. Last week, he was selected to the Oscar Robertson Trophy and Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Midseason watch lists.
