Kadary Richmond Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

Richmond averaged 17.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in wins over DePaul and RV/RV Connecticut
QUEENS, N.Y.  – St. John's standout guard Kadary Richmond was named BIG EAST Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.

Richmond averaged a team-high 17.5 points, shooting 51.9 percent from the field and 77.8 percent at the free-throw line to help lead St. John's to wins at DePaul and over RV/RV UConn last week. The Brooklyn native added 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest in 27.0 minutes of action as the Red Storm moved to 15-2 in BIG EAST play, matching a program record for total conference victories.

On Wednesday against the Blue Demons in Chicago, the graduate student turned in a near double-double finishing with 17 points and nine rebounds. The team captain shot 8-for-14 (57.1 pct) from the floor and dished out five assists in an 82-58 triumph at Wintrust Arena.

Richmond followed with another stellar performance at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, tallying 18 points and shooting 6-for-8 (75%) from the charity stripe in the 89-75 victory over RV/RV Connecticut. The point guard filled up the box score adding four assists, two steals and two blocks.

On the year, Richmond is averaging 12.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Richmond ranks third in the league in steals per game and sixth in assists per game. During league competition, the veteran guard has molded into form recording 10 consecutive double-figure scoring outings and is logging 14.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.4 steals per contest in BIG EAST play.

Richmond becomes the second St. John's player to earn BIG EAST Player of the Week this season after RJ Luis Jr. earned the honor twice on Jan. 13 and Feb. 10. Monday's recognition marks the first time two different St. John's players have been named the conference's player of the week in the same season since Shamorie Ponds and Mustapha Heron during the 2018-19 campaign.

Richmond and the Red Storm will be back in action on Wednesday when it meets Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Tip-off in Indianapolis is slated for 9 p.m. ET and will air on CBS Sports Network.
