QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's men's basketball forward Dillon Mitchell was named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Player of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Mitchell becomes the first St. John's player to be named All-MET Player of the Week this season. The senior earned his first BIG EAST accolade yesterday, landing on the weekly honor roll.
Mitchell averaged 17.0 points on 63.6% shooting, 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game in comeback wins against Seton Hall and Xavier. The Johnnies engineered 15-point second half comebacks in both games.
Mitchell scored a team-high 17 points and matched a season-best 11 boards to record his second-straight double-double in the victory over Seton Hall, 65-60. The double-double effort marked the second straight for the senior for the first time since his sophomore year at Texas in 2024.
The forward followed it up by stuffing the box score in the 88-83 victory over Xavier on Saturday to lift Head Coach Rick Pitino to his 900thcareer on-court victory. Mitchell finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and tied career-best marks with six assists and four steals.
On the year, Mitchell has started eight of 20 contests and is averaging 9.5 points on a team-high 61.1% shooting, 6.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game. The senior has led the Johnnies in assists in eight games this season and his rebounding mark ranks ninth in the BIG EAST. Since re-entering the starting five, the team captain has added 11.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game during the six-game win streak.
Mitchell and the Red Storm will be back in action tomorrow night when it hosts Butler at Madison Square Garden for a 7 p.m. tip-off. To purchase tickets click here, visit RedStormTix.com, call 1-888-GO-STORM or e-mail redstormsports@stjohns.edu.
