St. John’s senior forward helped lead the Johnnies to the 2026 BIG EAST Regular Season Championship with a pair of wins last week
QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's men's basketball forward Zuby Ejiofor was named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Oscar National Player of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Â
Ejiofor is one of five players from across the country to be recognized as the nation's best last week, guiding the Johnnies to an outright BIG EAST Regular Season Championship.
Â
Ejiofor averaged 22.0 points on 72.0 percent (18-25 FG) shooting from the field in a pair of wins over Georgetown and Seton Hall. The victories secured the Red Storm's first back-to-back BIG EAST Regular Season titles since 1984-85 & 1985-86.
Â
The 6-foot-9 forward shot 80 percent (8-10 FG) from the free throw line, posted 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 blocks per game.
Â
On Senior Night on Tuesday, the Garland, Texas, native showed out in the 72-69 victory over Georgetown. The team captain posted 23 points on 76.9 percent (10-13 FG) shooting, seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals in his final regular season home game at Madison Square Garden.
Â
In Friday's regular season finale, despite battling through foul trouble, Ejiofor paced the Johnnies to clinching the program's seventh BIG EAST Regular Season Championship. The Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year finished the contest with 21 points on 66.7 percent (8-12 FG) shooting and three blocks.
Â
Ejiofor currently ranks top-10 in the BIG EAST in scoring (6th at 16.0 PPG), rebounding (7th at 7.1), assists (9th at 3.5) and blocks (4th at 2.0). He is the only player in high-major basketball to lead his team and rank top-10 in the conference in all four statistical categories.
Â
Over the past couple days, Ejiofor has continued to rack up accolades. He was the only player in the league to be unanimously selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team and All-Defensive Team. On Monday, he became the fifth player in program history to win BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year.
Â
The top-seeded Johnnies will begin their quest for a second straight BIG EAST Tournament title in the quarterfinal round on Thursday. St. John's will meet the winner of eighth-seeded Butler and ninth-seeded Providence at 12 p.m. on Peacock.
