QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's men's basketball standout Zuby Ejiofor was named a College Hoops Today All-America Honorable Mention, national reporter Jon Rothstein announced on Wednesday.
Ejiofor was one of the top 20 players across the country to be recognized after guiding No. 18/17 St. John's to a 24-6 overall record and a 17-2 mark in the BIG EAST play.
After taking a massive jump last season, Ejiofor has continued to dominate for the Red Storm during his final collegiate campaign. Through 30 games, the big man is averaging 15.8 points on 54.1 percent shooting from the floor, 7.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.9 blocks and 1.2 steals per game. Ejiofor is the only player in high-major basketball to lead his team in scoring, rebounding, assists and blocks. Additionally, he is one of three players in NCAA Division I to rank top-10 in his league in all four categories joining Jackson Holcombe of Utah Valley and Howard's Cedric Taylor.
Ejiofor burst onto the scene last season averaging 14.7 points and 8.1 boards per game. He was named the BIG EAST's Most Improved Player, a first team all-league honoree and a College Sports Communicators Second Team Academic All-American. The accolades have continued to pour in for the 6-foot-9 forward as he was tabbed the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, just the program's second since 1992. As Ejiofor's continued to produce on the court at a high-level, he has been named to the Naismith Trophy Player of the Year Late-Season Watch List, the Naismith Trophy Defensive Player of the Year Late-Season Watch List and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Top-10 list.
The Garland, Texas, native ranks sixth in the BIG EAST averaging 15.8 points per game. Ejiofor has led the Johnnies in scoring in 12 contests, totaling 24 double-digit scoring outings, eight 20-plus point performances and matched a career-high 33 points against Providence on Jan. 3. The captain has gotten to the charity stripe with ease ranking top-35 in the country in free throws made (158) and attempts (225).
Aside from scoring, Ejiofor makes his impact felt all over the hardwood. On Saturday, he became the fourth St. John's player since 1993 to record a triple-double, tallying 16 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Friday for its regular season finale against Seton Hall at Prudential Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. and the game will air on FS1.
