St. John’s Drops Nail-Biter to Marquette, 11-10, in Double Overtime

The Red Storm recognized 10 seniors before the game
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's lacrosse team fell in a double overtime nail-biter on Saturday afternoon 11-10 against Marquette.
Neither side led by more than two goals in a neck-and-neck conference battle. The Red Storm rallied from a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter, but ultimately in the second extra period at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
Noah Plenn recorded a hat-trick to mark and one assist to improve his season total to 32 points. Mitch Campbell found the back of the net twice for his fourth multi-goal game of the season.
Adrian Nowak, Chase Huggard, Owen Rogers as well as Jayson Cardenas and Brody Hergott each found the score sheet.
Ethan Wiegand shined on the dot earning a career-high 16 wins at the "X" against the standout Golden Eagle face-off unit.
Matt Nelson garnered 12 saves to continue his double-digit saves in game for his 10th of the season.
St. John's tallied over 50 shots for the first-time since Feb. 10, 2024 against Quinnipiac.
St. John's opened the game with both squads trading possessions in a defensive battle, as goalies came up with key saves over the opening eight minutes. Huggard broke the deadlock with a low-corner goal at 7:08 to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead, followed by Plenn's first tally a minute later to push the advantage to 2-0.
Marquette responded with two goals to tie the game at two a piece with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter, but Nowak beat the buzzer to put St. John's ahead 3-2 heading into the second stanza.
The second quarter began with strong defensive play from both sides, highlighted by Nelson making a pair of crucial saves to preserve the Johnnie lead. At 7:06, a costly Marquette penalty allowed Plenn to score his second goal of the game, extending the St. John's advantage to 4-2.
The Golden Eagles quickly answered with two goals in under a minute to even the score at four with 5:35 remaining. The remainder of the quarter saw both defenses hold strong, with Nelson continuing his standout performance, making another two saves to keep the game tied heading into halftime deadlocked at four.
To open the second half, the defensive battle continued as both teams traded empty possessions. Campbell broke the deadlock with a long-range goal at the 9:04 mark, giving the Red Storm a 5-4 lead. Marquette responded with three consecutive goals over the next four minutes to take a 7-5 advantage.
Hergott answered for St. John's, cutting the deficit to one with 3:44 remaining in the third quarter. Following a Red Storm timeout, Rogers netted his first goal of the game to even the score at 7-7. Both defenses held firm over the closing minutes, sending the game into the final quarter tied at seven.
In the final frame, both defenses held firm through the opening three minutes before Marquette broke through with back-to-back goals to take a two-goal lead with 9:47 remaining. After a scoreless stretch, Cardenas recorded his first goal of the day, beating the goalie low to cut the deficit to one. Following a St. John's penalty, the Golden Eagles responded with a goal to restore their two-goal advantage.
