The Johnnies look to respond with statement win on Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's lacrosse team will look to bounce back on Saturday as it travels to Colorado for its first BIG EAST road matchup of the season against RV Denver (4-6, 0-2 BIG EAST). Faceoff from Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium is set for 12 p.m. MT.
Saturday's contest will be streamed on ESPN+, with Kienan Dixon on the call. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Last time out, the Red Storm battled in a tightly contested BIG EAST matchup, rallying from a two-goal fourth-quarter deficit to force double overtime before falling in the second extra period on Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Noah Plenn led the offense with a hat trick and an assist, while Mitch Campbell added two goals as five additional Johnnies found the scoresheet. Ethan Wiegand dominated at the faceoff X with a career-high 16 wins, and Matt Nelson recorded 12 saves as St. John's totaled over 50 shots in a strong all-around effort.
Plenn continues to rank among the nation's top freshmen, sitting seventh nationally in total points (32) and sixth in points per game (3.33). The Red Storm man-down unit has also been a key strength, ranking 11th nationally with a .765 success rate, allowing just eight goals on 34 opponent extra-man opportunities this season.
Denver enters Saturday's contest with an 0-2 record in BIG EAST play and a 4-6 overall mark, having dropped its last five games, including four against nationally ranked opponents.
Following a 7-7 campaign in 2025 that saw the Pioneers reach the BIG EAST Tournament, head coach Matt Brown's squad returns two of its top five scorers. Cody Malawsky, a 2025 All-BIG EAST Second Team selection and 2026 Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree, leads the offense with 27 points on 20 goals and seven assists. Marek Tzagournis has added 26 points on 13 goals and 13 assists, including a pair of hat tricks this season.
Defensively, Grayson Manning anchors the unit in goal. A USILA National Team of the Week selection last season, Manning has continued his strong play in 2026, posting an 8.83 goals-against average and a .618 save percentage with 134 total saves. He was most recently named to the Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-America First Team.
Following Saturday's matchup, the Red Storm will return to action on April 18 for another BIG EAST road contest against No. 13/12 Georgetown in Washington, D.C. Faceoff from Cooper Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
