St. John’s Head Coach Mike Anderson and senior center Joel Soriano spoke with the media following an 84-72 loss to Seton Hall at Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday
St. John’s Head Coach Mike Anderson
Opening Statement…
“Well obviously, we have a disappointed team and staff. Our fans were one of the best crowds, since I have been here. It was the red out. They were energized, had enthusiasm and they did a good job of really propelling this team early on. Let's give Seton Hall credit, they had stand power. The game went just like it was at their place. We went up and then they made a run at halftime. Coming out in the second half, we had momentum. But again, this game is all about making shots and free throws and you have to use the momentum when you get it. But what really hurt us, was our inability to take care of the basketball. Obviously, we had a situation that took place with our starting guard and we needed someone to step up. We didn't answer the call and that falls on me as a head coach.”
On the team’s performance late in the game…
“We didn't make good decisions. We got the ball in the post a couple times and we had some turnovers. We just didn't do a good job of executing. We got to the free-throw line and we missed free throws. It comes down to taking shots and executing."
On the Seton Hall defense…
“One of the things we always talk about is valuing the basketball. We had eight [turnovers] in the first [half] and nine in the second. We were giving them opportunities to score. A lot of it was bad decisions. They were getting in the lane and touching balls. We had a couple opportunities down the stretch, but the game was in balance for the most part."
On the depth of the team…
“Whenever guys get out of kilter, we just bring somebody else in. Now you're seeing Kolby [King], that's why you see AJ [Storr]. We are using other guys in different roles. Tonight, Esahia [Nyiwe] came out and gave us quality minutes.”
Senior Center Joel Soriano
On Seton Hall’s defense…
“The gaps were closed. Every time I took a dribble, I saw a defender on me. I feel like I played soft. I didn’t play like me.“
