Dr. Alex Gamble joined the Red Storm Sport's Medicine staff as the Associate Director of Sport Psychology in August of 2025. In this role, he provides mental health and performance services to student-athletes and collaborates as part of an interdisciplinary team to promote wellness and performance within the athletic department and campus community. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Psychology, Anthropology, and Religion from the University of Rochester and completed a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Counseling Psychology and a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Mental Health Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. He went on to earn his Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Organizational Psychology with an emphasis in Sport Psychology at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology.
Prior to arriving at St. John’s University, Dr. Gamble spent the last five years working as a behavioral health clinician within Rutgers University's athletic department, supporting the mental health and performance needs of student-athletes. His work integrates a person-centered, strength-based, holistic approach, drawing on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other mindfulness-based practices. He aims to create a warm, collaborative, and empowering space for student-athletes to explore their various identities and life experiences, while also cultivating the skills needed to align with their values and show up as their best selves in school, sport, and in life.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Gamble conducts research at the intersection of sport, mental health, and social justice. His work focuses on leveraging sport for youth development, promoting wellness among student-athletes of color, advancing equitable practices in sport organizations, and exploring the systemic and cultural factors that shape athlete development, performance, and well-being. Outside of his research and clinical work, Dr. Gamble remains active in the broader sports community, drawing on his experience as an AAU basketball coach and his ongoing involvement with several sport-based nonprofit organizations.
