Erin Jones secures second triple-double
QUEENS, N.Y.- Senior Erin Jones recorded her second triple-double in three games as the St. John's volleyball program picked up their second win of the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic, in a 3-1 victory over Delaware State.
The Red Storm (2-7, 0-0 BIG EAST) finished the game with a season high in total blocks with nine and half. The team was able to capitalize off 16 service errors by the Hornets (4-5, 0-0 MEAC). The scores of the sets were 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 and 25-19.
Jones finished with a team high 15 kills, 17 assists and was one of three Johnnies to collect 12 digs. The Albuquerque, N.M., native finished hitting over .500 and added three service aces to boot.
Kya Harris and Kendall White each notched career-highs with seven kills. Martina Capponcelli led the team with 23 assists. In addition to Jones, Martina Ghezzi and Rashanny Solano Smith had 12 digs. Shiloh Clayton set a career-high and led the match with five service aces.
A few unforced errors on both sides opened the scoring, before a White kill and block assists from Ghezzi and Chloe Bell allowed the home team to build a lead, 5-3. The Red Storms lead would continue to grow highlighted by Jones kill at 13-7. The Hornets engineered a 7-1 run to tie the match at 14-14. The two squads would exchange points until 17-17, when the home team rattled off three straight points capped off with a Harris kill. The visitors applied pressure through the end of the set, but a costly net violation at set point put St. John's on top, 25-22.
To start the second set, the Red Storm built a 6-2 lead out of the gate. The Hornets responded with a sizable run of their own and took the lead at 9-8. Later in the set, Jones would be responsible for four consecutive St. John's points before the media timeout at 15-11. Delaware St. came out of the timeout and cut the lead to just one, forcing a Johnnies timeout. After the stoppage, the Red Storm responded to a visitors 3-0 run with a 6-0 run, thanks to Clayton surpassing her season high in service aces doing so in just one trip to the line with four, 24-18. Delaware St. made a push but fell with an identical score of 25-22.
In the third frame, the Hornets jumped out to an early lead at 10-5. In the middle part of the frame, a diving play from Solano Smith that turned into a kill ignited Carnesecca Arena and sparked an 8-3 home team run forcing a Delaware St. timeout 18-15. The Red Storm continued to build their lead on a 3-1 run capped with a Lodi kill at 21-17. The Hornets erased the deficit to come back and take the third frame, 25-21.
The fourth stanza saw an exchange of points early, but a Harris kill put the home team up 7-6. The Hornets attempted to build a lead, but a service error evened the match at 9-9. As Ghezzi stepped up to the service line, she fired three aces to help build a lead for the Johnnies at 17-11. Delaware St. made another push and force a St. John's timeout, 18-15. A back-and-forth would ensue, but a Ludovica Zola ace and a Bell block put the Red Storm up 23-17. A Ghezzi kill would trigger a match point, as the Johnnies would take set four 25-19.
St. John's will close out the 11th annual Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic tomorrow afternoon against Tennessee, with first serve is set for 1 p.m. inside Carnesecca Arena.
