St. John’s Falls to West Virginia in the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic, 3-0

Red Storm will be in action tomorrow against Delaware St.
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2025)- The St. John's volleyball program dropped their second match of the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic to West Virginia late Friday night, 3-0. The scores of the sets were 25-20, 25-16, and 25-19.
The Red Storm fall to 1-1 in its annual home tournament after sweeping Marist earlier in the day, 3-0.
Martina Ghezzi had a game high 11 kills, Erin Jones picked up 12 assists and Rashanny Solano Smith secured 14 digs.
The Red Storm started the match with a kill from Kya Harris to open the scoring, but the visitors jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. St. John's would erase the deficit on a 7-3 run of their own, highlighted by a Jones kill, 10-10. As West Virginia jumped out to a small lead, the teams would trade points before the media timeout at 15-12. The squads exchanged points throughout the set, but the Mountaineers lead held up, taking the first set 25-20.
To start the second set, the Mountaineers worked their way to an early 6-2 lead and forced the home team to take a timeout. West Virginia's offense continued to roll, but the Red Storm would go point-for-point and come within three after a Lucrezia Lodi kill, 13-10. Another visitors run would put them up by as many as six at 18-12. St. John's still applied pressure on Mountaineers, cutting the lead to four at 19-15. In the end, West Virginia would take the set, 25-16.
The Red Storm came out firing in the third frame, taking a 6-2 lead and forcing the visitors to take an early timeout. West Virginia would erase the deficit at 11 -11 and a back-and-forth would ensue. The visitors lead then bubbled to as many as five at 16-11. St. John's cut it back to a single point at 17-16, before the Mountaineers used an 8-3 run to end the match as 25-19.
St. John's is back in action tomorrow for their third match of the 2025 Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic. First serve against Delaware St. is set for 3:30 p.m.
