Ward started his 17-year coaching stint at St. John's in 1947, while simultaneously serving as the Director of Intramurals. During his tenure, Ward coached Metropolitan Intercollegiate Cross Country Championship teams and various local and sectional track titles. He went on to become the president of the National Collegiate Cross Country Coaches Association, the IC4A Track Coaches Association and the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Track Coaches. Ward also represented the U.S. as a representative of the Olympic Committee in Rome in 1960.
