Dr. Carl Fields

Dr. Carl Fields was the first African American student to be offered an athletic scholarship at St. John's, and the first to captain an athletic team at the university. After graduating from St. John's in 1942, Fields went on to become the first African American dean of an Ivy League university, assuming the position of assistant dean of the college at Princeton University in 1968. Before passing away in 1998, Fields, who also served on his alma mater's President's Advisory Council, received the St. John's University Distinguished Achievement Award, the University's President's Medal and the Medal of Honor.
