Frank McGuire

McGuire played baseball and basketball at St. John's under Buck Freeman from 1933 to 1936. McGuire went into coaching in the mid-1930s at Xavier Military Academy before succeeding Joe Lapchick at his alma mater. Under his administration, the Redman basketball team came within an eyelash of the national title in 1952. In 1949, under his tutelage, the Redmen baseball squad made its first trip to the College World Series. McGuire was the first coach to reach the fabled “Final Four” in two sports. In addition to St. John's McGuire 35 went on to coach at North Carolina and South Carolina and served as the Director of Collegiate Sports at Madison Square Garden. He was elected to the James A. Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
