Hederman came to St. John's already a highly decorated athlete as she won two gold medals at the 1960 Rome Olympic games in the 100-yard backstroke and as part of the medley relay. She had also competed in the 1959 Pan-American games. Despite not having a varsity swim team for women, Hederman helped serve St. John's by lending a hand at varied meets and tournaments.
