Reilly was the winner of All-American honors for three-consecutive years in saber at St. John's. As an amateur, he served with the U.S. Team in the 1973 World University Games as well as in the Junior Olympics. He later earned a position on the 1980 and 1984 Olympic teams. Reilly embodied spirit and sportsmanship to match his physical drive and constant attack.
