Carter played an important role in leading St. John's to the NCAA Elite Eight in 1979. He averaged 15.0 points per game and amassed 1,061 points in three seasons with St. John's. At the time of his induction, Carter ranked 27th all- 41 time in points scored. On Dec. 16, 1978, he set what was then the Alumni Hall scoring record with 39 points in a win over Brigham Young.
