The first St. John's women's basketball player to score 1,000 points in her career, Bretthauer was St. John's Team MVP as a freshman in 1974-75 as well as the 1975 New York State Tournament for the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women MVP. In 1976-77, she led St. John's to their first NYSAIAW Tournament title. At the time of her induction, Bretthauer was third all-time in points with 1,399 and held three records for steals in a game (11), a season (173) and for her career (329).
