Hanlon was a two-time (1977, 1980) NCAA All-American track & field honoree for the 400 intermediate hurdles, as well as an IC4A team member in the same events. He was the 1980 BIG EAST Champion in the 50, 110 and 400 hurdles and the Metropolitan winner in the indoor 500- meter dash. He was also a member of the BIG EAST Champion 400-meter relay and the winning shuttle hurdle relay at the Rutgers Relays. After graduation, Hanlon worked as part of St. John's Sports Information Office.
