ST. JOHN'S ANNOUNCES NATIONAL NETWORK TELEVISION SCHEDULE

CBS Sports has picked up three Red Storm games (Sat., Jan. 6 at UCONN, Sun., Feb. 18 at Madison Square Garden vs. Duke and Sun., Mar. 4 at MSG vs. Syracuse), while ABC carries two contests (at Miami, Sat., Feb. 10 and at Villanova, Sun., Feb. 25).
"I think this schedule of television broadcasts acknowledges the fact that St. John's basketball is respected by the networks as one of the premiere programs in the country," Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics, Edward J. Manetta, Jr. "We look forward to a competitive schedule as we brace ourselves for what we hope will be another successful season."
Head Coach Mike Jarvis returns two starters (senior Reggie Jessie and junior Anthony Glover) to a lineup that features a talented recruiting class led by McDonald's All-American point guard Omar Cook.
His young squad tips off the 2000-2001 campaign on ESPN2 versus Tubby Smith and the University of Kentucky (Thurs., Nov. 9) in the Coaches vs. Cancer IKON Classic. The following night, St. John's closes out the tournament schedule with the winner of the UCLA/Kansas game to be played on Nov. 10.
"We open up with two easy games," Jarvis joked. "We jump right into the fire with a tough first week of the season but that's why kids come to St. John's - to play the best so they can be the best."
ESPN features two BIG MONDAY telecasts on its prime-time schedule, one at home (MSG) versus Miami on Jan. 22 and one on the road at Notre Dame on Feb. 5, both at 7:00 p.m. Georgetown graces the final ESPN contest at 9:00 p.m. on Wed., Feb. 21 in a classic BIG EAST battle at MSG. In addition, the championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer IKON CLassic will be broadcast on ESPN at 9:00 p.m. on Fri. Nov. 10. The consolation game of that tournament will be featured on ESPN2 at 6:30 p.m.
ESPN2 completes the national television slate with two games broadcast on their college basketball schedule. St. John's will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for a non-conference clash at Ohio State on Wed., Dec. 13 at 7:00 p.m., followed by a date at Madison Square Garden versus UCONN (Tues., Jan. 30 at 7:00 p.m.).
In addition, St. John's continues its rivalries with local college foes like Fordham (at MSG), Hofstra (at Nassau Coliseum), Manhattan, Stony Brook and Niagara (at Alumni Hall) to complete a competitive 2000-2001 schedule.
