SJUs Wingert Named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week

Wingert led the number one ranked Red Storm to the team championship at the Rutgers Classic, earning defensive MVP honors in the process. He led a defensive unit that recorded a pair of shutouts with a 4-0 win over Old Dominion and a 0-0 tie with nationally ranked UCLA.
The junior captain, who starts at center back, has appeared in every game this season. He is tied with three other players for the team lead in goals scored, with three, and is also tied for second on team in points, with seven.
Wingert, a first team all-conference selection last year, finished the season forth on the team in 2001. He spent his post season playing on the U-23 National Team and his summer playing with the Chicago Fires PDL team.
Earlier this season, he was named the conferences preseason Defensive Player of the Year and has helped lead the Red Storm to an 8-1-2 overall record and 4-1-0 BIG EAST Conference record.
St. Johns will be back in action on Wednesday, October 16 at 7 p.m. against Rutgers.
