Wingert Named Finalist for Hermann Trophy

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- St. Johns University junior defender Chris Wingert (Babylon, N.Y.) was named one of 15 finalists on Thursday for the Missouri Athletic Clubs Hermann Trophy for men and women, awarded to the top players in NCAA Division I soccer. Wingert, the BIG EASTs Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, has led St. Johns to an 11-1-5 overall record and a No. 2 national ranking. Named the BIG EASTs Defensive Player of the Week three times this season, Wingert has scored three goals and one assist for seven points. He was also selected today as a member of the Verizon Academic All-District I team, carrying a 3.83 grade-point average in communication arts. He was joined on the list of finalists by Indiana senior forward Pat Noonan, Virginia junior Alecko Eskandarian, Creighton senior Mike Tranchilla, Indiana senior midfielder Ryan Mack, Wake Forest junior midfielder Brian Carroll, San Diego senior forward Ryan Coiner, UCLA senior midfielder Ryan Futogaki, Maryland junior midfielder Sumed Ibrahim, Portland junior Nate Jaqua, Stanford senior forward Roger Levesque, South Carolina senior forward Jordan Quinn, Connecticut senior forward Damani Ralph, North Carolina junior defender David Stokes and Southern Methodist senior midfielder Diego Walsh. The Red Storm, who finished 17-3-3 overall last season, advanced to the NCAA Final Four and won the programs 10th BIG EAST Championship, with Wingert leading a defensive unit that set a school record with 12 shutouts. A first team all-conference selection last year, he finished fourth on the team in scoring with six goals and 12 points. He was also a first-team Verizon Academic All-District selection, and third team Verizon Academic All-American. One of the teams captains last year, Wingert was selected to the U-23 National Team following the season and spent this summer playing with the Chicago Fires PDL team. Winners of the M.A.C. Athletic Clubs Hermann Trophy will be announced at a news conference in Dallas, Texas, on December 12, in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Mens College Cup and the announcement of the NSCAA/adidas All-America teams for intercollegiate play. The Red Storm host Seton Hall on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament at Belson Stadium.
