Freshman pitcher Mike Holden (Sufern, N.Y.) threw four innings of shutout ball to pick up his first collegiate win. Holden allowed only two singles, both in the second inning, and retired the last nine batters he faced before leaving with a 9-0 lead in the fourth.
The Red Storm got on the board in the second with a pair of runs. Senior third baseman Jason Kane (Rutherford, N.J.) was issued a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single from sophomore Jeremy Winter (Cliffside Park, N.J.). Winter, who moved to second on the throw home and then to third on a wild pitch, scored on a sacrifice fly from senior Billy Graiser (Muttontown, N.Y.).
In the third, freshman Brett Hardie (Toms River, N.J.) was issued a leadoff walk and scored when sophomore left fielder Anthony DeRosa (Salem, N.H.) hit a two-run home run. With two out, junior right fielder Ray Downs (New Rochelle, N.Y.) hit a solo home run to give SJU a 5-0 lead. Winter followed with a double to left and scored on a single from freshman Jim Martin (Norwood, Mass.). Martin moved to second on a single from Graiser, and both scored when sophomore shortstop Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, N.J.) doubled to center.
The Red Storm added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Kane, increasing the lead to 7-0. In the sixth, Hardie singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a balk before being delivered home on a single from freshman catcher Blake Hershelman (Georgetown, Del.). A double from senior Jason Fischette (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored Hershelman and Fischette scored on a single by Martin, giving SJU a 12-0 lead.
St. Johns added three more runs in the seventh, with DeRosa driving in two with a single and Hershelman adding a sacrifice fly.
The Red Storm play next on Thursday at Fairleigh Dickinson at 3 p.m., and then on Friday at Hofstra at 3 p.m.
