St. Johns received strong pitching performances from senior Greg Holmes (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and junior John Klemm, Jr. (Salem, N.H). Holmes worked six and one third innings giving up one earned run and yielding only three hits. Klemm worked the final two and two third innings giving up one earned run on one hit.
After going down by a run in the bottom of the second inning the Red Storm responded with a run of there own in the top of the third. Freshman Brett Hardie (Toms River, N.J.) knocked a double into the gap that scored Mike Rozema (Fairlawn, N.J.). St. Johns added another run in the fifth when Rozema singled home Blake Hershelman (Georgetown, Del.).
Senior Charlie Bilezikijian (Staten Island, N.Y.) added a home run in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 3-1. This was Bilezikijian's second home run in as many games and his fifth on the season. The Red Storm added two more runs in the top of the eight inning on an RBI single by junior Ray Downs (New Rochelle, N.Y) and an RBI double by Josh Young (Rochester, N.Y.).
Hofstra scored on run in the ninth and with two on and two outs with the tying run at the plate, Klemm struck out Mackie Root to end the threat and earn the save for the Red Storm.
The St. Johns baseball team will be celebrating St. Patricks day on Sunday March 17, 2002 when they host a double header against Monmouth at the Ballpark at St. Johns. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
