Dorsey is the second St. Johns player to sign a contract with a Major League team following last weeks amateur draft, joining Charlie Bilezikjian (Staten Island, N.Y.), who was a 14th round pick by the Texas Rangers. St. Johns senior Mike Tamulionis (West Bridgewater, Mass.), a 31st round selection of the Rangers, has yet to sign with the team.
Dorsey, who transferred to St. Johns from Briarcliffe Community College last year, led the Red Storm to a 29-23 record this season. SJU finished in sixth place in the BIG EAST with a 13-13 mark, falling one game shy of a spot in the postseason tournament.
The senior led the Red Storm pitching staff this season, finishing the season with a 7-2 overall record and a 3.80 earned run average. In conference action, he posted a 4-1 record with a 2.91 ERA. Dorsey ranked seventh in the BIG EAST in overall wins, third in the league in conference ERA and eighth in opponents batting average (.281). A converted shortstop that has only pitched for three years, Dorsey ranked second on the team in innings pitched (71) and strikeouts (46). He threw at least seven innings in six of his last seven starts and posted a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 2.5-1 (46Ks, 18 BBs).
After spending last season as a reliever, Dorsey moved into the starting rotation early in the 2002 season and responded with several big outings, including a no-hitter through eight innings against local rival St. Francis (N.Y.). In addition, he threw a complete game seven-inning, three-hitter in a 3-2 win over Virginia Tech, allowed two runs on five hits in eight innings while striking out 10 against Seton Hall and scattered 10 hits over nine innings in a 7-2 win over Rutgers.
Dorsey was impressive off the field as well, posting a 3.43 grade-point average in sports management. He was a BIG EAST Academic All-Star and was named to the Verizon Academic All-American District I team.
