St. Johns Fencers Compete at World Championships

Smart was joined by St. Johns senior Ivan Lee (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who finished 40th in the sabre. Lee, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the U.S., played an important role on the Red Storms 2001 NCAA Championship and 2002 NCAA runner-up teams.
St. Johns alum Jonathan Tiomkin (Brooklyn, N.Y.), currently ranked No. 1 in the foil in the U.S., finished 72nd at the World Championships. Tiomkin captained the Red Storm to a second place finish at the 2002 NCAA Championship while earning a silver medal in the foil.
St. Johns fencing head coach Yury Gelman was on hand as a coach for the U.S. World Championship team. In his seven seasons Gelman has established St. Johns as a national powerhouse. The Red Storm enter the 2002-03 season in search of the programs second national title in the past three years.
