St. John’s to Face Memphis in Cayman Islands Classic Finale

Red Storm defeated Georgia Tech, 77-75, on Friday night
GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman– The St. John's Women's Basketball team (6-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) will close out the Cayman Islands Classic on Saturday night against Memphis (4-4, 0-0 American) at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Saturday's contest will be streamed on FloSports with Dr. Joanna Settles and Jess Settles on the call from John Gray Gymnasium in George Town, Grand Cayman. Live stats will be RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm opened the Cayman Islands Classic with a closely contested victory over Georgia Tech, 77-75, on Friday night. After building an early lead, Georgia Tech took the lead in the second half and held a seven-point advantage with eight minutes to play. The Johnnies came up clutch down the stretch with Janeya Grant nail a pair of pivotal 3-pointers and key defensive plays in the closing minutes.
Brooke Moore (25) and Sa'Mya Wyatt (20) paced the Red Storm combining for 45 points in Friday's win over the Yellow Jackets.Moore set a new career-high in scoring for the third consecutive game and went 10-for-11 from the charity stripe. The junior is leading the team averaging 15.1 points per game. Wyatt, who notched her first 20-point performance at St. John's is averaging 13.5 points per game over her last four contests.
Shaulana Wagner dished out 13 assists on Friday evening, marking the highest total by a St. John's player since Nadirah McKenith provided 14 helpers against Pittsburgh on Feb. 26, 2011. The graduate student surpassed the 400-career assist threshold become the 22nd active player in NCAA Division I to achieve the feat. The Detroit, Mich., native leads the BIG EAST logging 6.6 dishes per contest.
Over the last four seasons, the Red Storm is 31-8 in non-conference regular season games including a 4-1 record against Power 4 conferences opponents during that span. The Johnnies are currently riding a five-game winning streak, dating back to Veteran's Day.
Led by Wagner's distribution efforts, St. John's recorded 23 assists on 25 made field goals (92.0%). The Johnnies shot over 50 percent for the third time in the last four games. In the victory over Georgia Tech, St. John's shot 53.2 percent (25-47) and made a season-high nine 3-pointers.
On the glass, the Red Storm outrebounded the Yellow Jackets, 35-27. Georgia Tech came into the game ranking top-30 in NCAA Division I in rebounds per game, rebounding margin and defensive boards per game. St. John's is 6-0 when it outrebounds its opponent this season.
The two squads will meet for the fifth time with St. John's leading the all-time series, 3-1. In the last meeting, the Red Storm edged the Tigers at the Las Vegas Invitational, 61-57, on Nov. 25, 2022 as the Johnnies got out to their best start in program history 13-0 that season.
Memphis comes into the contest with an even 4-4 record and fell in its first game in the Cayman Islands to Florida, 74-60, on Friday night. The Tigers are led by Chae Harries averaging 16.6 points per game.
Following its return from the Cayman Islands, St. John's will open BIG EAST play on Thursday against Creighton at Carnesecca Arena.
