St. John’s Catches Fire in Victory Over Memphis, 84-73, to Close Cayman Islands Classic

Sa’Mya Wyatt and Brooke Moore combined for 42 points to propel Red Storm to sixth straight victory
GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman (Nov. 29, 2025) – Behind a lights out shooting performance, the St. John's women's basketball team (7-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) grabbed its sixth-straight victory on Saturday night over Memphis (4-5, 0-0 American), 84-73.
The Johnnies shot a season-best 60.4 percent (32-53) from field goal range their highest mark since they posted 60.8 percent mark from the floor in the WBIT First Round win over Florida, 79-61, on March 21, 2024. The Red Storm went 11-of-12 to start the game and never looked back in the wire-to-wire victory to finish the Cayman Islands Classic undefeated.
Sa'Mya Wyatt set a new season-high with 22 points on 11-of-17 shooting for her second straight 20-point game in the Cayman Islands.
For the second time in the last three games Brooke Moore recorded a double-double finishing with 20 points on 6-for-7 shooting and 11 rebounds. The junior has reached the 20-point mark for the third straight contest.
Moore and Wyatt were both named to the Cayman Islands Classic All-Tournament Team.
Beautiful Waheed recorded her best performance of the season tallying season-high's of 17 points and nine rebounds. Janeya Grant was the fourth Johnnie to finish double-digits adding 11 points.
The Johnnies dished out 23 assists for the second game in a row and provided helpers on 80.7 percent of their made field goals during the Cayman Islands Classic.
In the opening minutes, the Red Storm struggled to handle the ball as Memphis built an 8-3 lead at the first media timeout. Waheed added the first five points of the game for the Johnnies and finished with nine during the frame. In the final five minutes of the opening quarter, the Red Storm came alive orchestrating a 20-5 run to close the frame. The Johnnies made nine of their last 10 field goals to close the stanza and shot 81.8 percent overall in the first to hold a double-digit advantage, 23-13.
In the second quarter, St. John's continued its red-hot shooting as Janeya Grant made a triple to balloon the Johnnies cushion to their largest of the half, 28-17. After the Tigers trimmed their deficit to five, Wagner corralled a loose ball and threw it up the floor to Waheed for a wide-open triple. Memphis climbed as close as three points before the Red Storm ended the first half on a 5-0 run. Moore knocked down a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to carry a 44-36 lead into the locker room.

Going into the third frame, Wagner opened the second half scoring with a sweeping off-balance lay-up. Later in the frame, Grant knocked a straightaway triple as the Johnnies cashed in on five of their first attempts from downtown. Waheed got in on the action knocking one down from long-range. Wagner closed the scoring as the Johnnies extended their lead to 15, 62-47. Memphis added a bucket as the Red Storm brought a 13-point lead into the final frame, 62-49.
In the final stanza, the Red Storm continued to fill it up extending its lead. Moore finished a pivotal and one at the 5:50 mark. The Johnnies extended their lead to as many as 17, after Grant nailed her third triple of the night to take a commanding 79-62 lead with three minutes to go. The Tigers engineered a 9-0 run to come within single-digits but were staved off by the Red Storm in the final minute.
St. John's will return to the Big Apple to prepare for BIG EAST competition when it hosts Creighton on Thursday night at 7 p.m. from Carnesecca Arena.
