St. John's Women Fencers Sweep Matches; Men Split

In womens action, St. Johns dominated the competition by only losing 11 bouts out of a possible 108 in the four matches. In their first match the Red Storm beat Cal-State, 22-5, winning the saber 9-0, the epee, 8-1 and then having a scare in the foil, prevailing, 5-4. Against NYU and UC-San Diego, the women won both by a score of 26-1, going undefeated in the saber, 9-0, and then losing a point to NYU in the epee and to UCSD in the epee. In their final match they took on Stanford, winning the match, 23-4, taking the saber 8-1, the foil 6-3, and the epee, 9-0.
The saber team of Julia Gelman (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Christina Crane (Madison, Ga.) and Katarzyna Wieronski (Warren, N.J.), were virtually unstoppable, losing only one point, to Stanford, in the four-team meet.
On the mens side, the Red Storm earned a hard fought victory against Cal- State, by winning the saber, 5-4, and the epee, 9-0, dropping only the foil matches, 2-7. In their other victory, versus UC-San Diego, the men won convincingly winning the saber and foil by a 6-3 score and the epee 9-0.
The mens epee team of Matthew Cox (Flourtown, Pa.), Anton Gurevich (Ashkelohn, Israel), and Arpad Horvath (Budapest, Hungary) earned a total of 29 points of a possible 36 during their four matches.
The St. Johns mens and womens fencing teams return to action on January 17-20 at the NAC Division I Juniors in San Diego, Calif.
