Fencing History

The program gave St. John's its second NCAA National Championship in 2001. Head coach Yury Gelman has established St. John's as a national power both at the men's and women's level, with recent athletes winning individual national championships as well as competing at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. The program debuted in the 1940's. The fencing programs list of accomplishments are noted below:
- Ten SJU Fencers have earned All-American honors (Ivan Lee - 2002)
- NCAA Runner-up (men and women, 2000, 2002)
- 2001 NCAA Champions (men and women)
- Ranked among top five programs in last six years in NCAA
- Two Olympic Performers (Keeth Smart and Arlene Stevens) competed at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
- Several individual NCAA champions in the epee, sabre and foil.
