St. John's Fencing Closes Out Regular Season

The Red Storm women's team finished the regular season with a 13-1 overall record.
The men's team dropped a 21-6 decision to Penn State to close out the regular season with an 8-4 record. The Red Storm, however, were competing without seven of their top fencers, most of whom were competing in international competitions last weekend.
In women's action, SJU beat Temple, 15-12, winning the epee, sabre, and the foil by a score of 5-4. Against Penn State, the women lost 20-7, losing the epee (7-2) and the foil (8-1), and winning the sabre, 5-4. Sophomore Julia Gelman (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton H.S.) won four of six bouts in the sabre. Angelica Miranda (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood H.S.), Christina Crane (Madison, Ga./Counterpane School), Kasia Wieronski (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional H.S.), Jean Hergenhan (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington H.S.), Liz Thottam (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills H.S.) all contributed with three wins apiece over the weekend. The St. Johns University mens and womens fencing teams will be back in action March 9 at the Northeast Regional in New York, N.Y.
