JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The NCAA and United States Air Force Academy officials announced today that the men's and women's fencing championships will be moved to Saturday and Sunday, March 22-23 due to severe weather conditions in the Colorado region.
Colorado received as much as six feet of snow in parts of the state. The weather conditions in the region forced the cancellation of flights, and the Red Storm team, which won the NCAA Championship in 2001, will depart on Friday.
Competition will now begin on Saturday. Opening ceremonies will be held at 9:30 a.m., with mens rounds 1 through 4 beginning at 10 a.m., and womens rounds 1 through 4 beginning at 2 p.m.
On Sunday, mens rounds 5 through 7 will begin at 9 a.m., with semifinals and finals being held from noon until 1 p.m. Womens rounds five through 7 will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with semifinals and finals from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The Red Storm have qualified 10 fencers for the NCAA Championships, including three-time All-American Ivan Lee (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who has won two individual titles in the sabre, and senior Arlene Stevens (Fairport, N.Y.), a three-time All-American in the epee and a United States Olympian.
