NOTRE DAME, IN (October 24, 2004) - The St. John's Volleyball team fell to BIG EAST opponent Notre Dame, 3-0 (30-16, 30-17, 30-20) this afternoon at the Joyce Center. The Red Storm falls to 14-9 (0-4 BIG EAST) while the Fighting Irish improve to 11-6 (4-0 BIG EAST).
St. John's was led by sophomore outside hitter Alicia Carmignani who recorded 11 kills and nine digs, while freshman LaToya Blunt notched eight kills.
Tied throughout the first eight points in game one, Notre Dame ran off with four straight points with aggressive serving by setter Ashley Tarutis. Despite an outstanding defense effort by Red Storm libero Nicole Colaluca, the Fight Irish took game one, 30-16.
Down 5-3 in game two, Carmignani served four straight points to give St. John's the lead at six. Notre Dame fought back, taking a demanding lead at 22-11 with kills by Adrianna Stasiuk. Right side hitter Blunt led the Red Storm late in the game with two kills, but was not enough as Notre Dame took game two, 30-17.
St. John's and Notre Dame were tied throughout the first six points before the Fighting Irish took the lead with kills by Lauren Kelbley. St. John's cut the lead to three at 16-13 with excellent defensive efforts both at the net and in the back row to keep the ball alive. Although the Red Storm attempted a late game run, the Fighting Irish pulled away with the game and the match, 30-20.
The Red Storm returns to action this Friday when they host BIG EAST opponent Rutgers at Alumni Hall. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
