Queens, NY (November 19, 2004) - St. John's volleyball junior Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, NY) was named All-BIG EAST First Team, it was announced this evening at the conference banquet in Pittsburgh, PA. This is the second year in a row that Ahlers has been named to the prestigious list who also received first team pre-season conference honors this past August.
Ahlers is only the second Red Storm player in history to earn first team honors and first since alum Olga Roudvoski earned it during her senior season in 2000.
"Once again we are extremely proud of Jackie as she continues to leave her mark in the St. John's and BIG EAST Conference records books" said head coach Joanne Persico-Smith. "I know that if she continues to work hard and stay focused on the important things in life, she will make her dreams come true."
For the season, Ahlers set the BIG EAST conference and St. John's record for kills in a single season with 616 total kills, a record she had originally broken in 2003. She is ranked 11th in the country and first in the BIG EAST in kills per game, averaging 5.45 and ranks first in the conference in total points. During the season Ahlers was named to four different All-Tournament teams, including being named the Most Valuable Player at the IPFW Invitational and the Colgate Classic. For her efforts over the course of the season, Ahlers was named BIG EAST player of the week once.
For her career, Ahlers continues to take her play to the next level. In 2004, Alhers broke the school record for all-time most kills, totaling 1,736 with two more games left in the season. She also set the mark for kills by a freshman with 512 during her first season. She has a career hitting percentage of .290, good for third on the all-time list.
The Red Storm returns to action when they will host #11 Florida, Towson and Wake Forest at the St. John's Volleyball Classic on November 26-27 at Alumni Hall.
