QUEENS, NY (November 26, 2004) - The St. John's University volleyball team fell to #12 Florida 3-0 (30-27, 30-12, 30-16) tonight in the second match of the 2004 St. John's Classic at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm fall to 15-15, while the Gators improve to 26-4.
Junior Jackie Ahlers led St. John's with nine kills, while Yana Ruban and LaToya Blunt each notched seven kills. Setter Lisa Tedder recorded 32 assists in the three game loss.
St. John's and Florida battled back and forth throughout the first several points in game one with kills from middle hitter Ahlers and Anicia Wood. Down 25-27, Ahlers put one down the line against the Florida defense to pull within one. But the Gators aggressive plays at the net by SEC Player of the Year Jane Collymore was not enough, as Florida stole game one, 30-27.
The Gators came out strong in game two, taking a demanding lead at 13-3. Although the Red Storm attempted a late game run with kills by Ahlers and Caitlin Rimgaila, Florida took game two, 30-12.
In game three, the Gators pulled out to another quick lead at 5-0. The Red Storm quickly answered back, scoring several straight points with kills by Ruban and digs by libero Nicole Colaluca. Aggressive jump serving by Collymore late in the game led the Gators to an easy 30-16 win.
Collymore led the Gators with 20 kills, hitting .562 on the night. Sherri Williams added 12 kills and setter Angie McGinnis notched 41 assists.
The Red Storm returns to action tomorrow night when they will face Wake Forest in the consolation match of the 2004 St. John's Classic at 7 pm. Florida will take on Towson, who topped Wake Forest 3-0 earlier in the day, for the championship at 4 p.m.
