Queens, NY - St. John's University announced today that Rodney Epperson, a member of the men's basketball team, will be withheld from competition and practices indefinitely due to a review of his transfer requirements from Barton County Community College during the 2002-03 school year.
The review was prompted by correspondence from the BIG EAST Conference to all of its member institutions regarding recent news reports of allegations related to Barton County Community College. The University will continue to withhold Epperson until the review is complete.
The Red Storm (4-4) will be without Epperson in tomorrow night's opening round of the Dreyfus Holiday Festival against Canisius at Madison Square Garden. Tip off is set for 8:30 p.m. Columbia plays North Carolina State in the first game at 6:30 p.m.
"Rodney has been one of our most consistent performers and has displayed great commitment throughout the season," said St. John's coach Norm Roberts. "Rodney has done everything I've asked of him on and off the court and the team will have to step up in his absence."
Epperson is averaging 14.1 points per game (second on the team) in eight games thus far this season.
No further comments will be made at this time.
