JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The St. John's University men's and women's fencing teams began competition for the second half of the season with several team members - both current and former - competing at the North American Cup in San Jose, California recently.
In men's saber action, 2001 alum Keeth Smart placed first in the Division I competition, while 2003 graduate Ivan Lee placed second. Smart and Lee are ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in the United States. Smart, who was ranked No. 1 in the world last season, is currently ranked sixth, while Lee, who has started to compete in more world competitions following his graduation from St. John's in May, has moved up to 26th in the world.
Several members of the current Red Storm team posted equally impressive performances. Freshman Benjamin Bratton (New York, N.Y.) finished in 10th place in the Division I senior men's epee competition, and took first place in the junior men's epee competition. Sophomore Josh Guevara (Coppell, Texas) placed 55th overall.
Junior Sergey Isayenko (Cherkassy, Ukraine) tied for third overall in the Division I senior men's saber competition, finishing just behind Smart and Lee.
On the women's side, junior Christina Crane (Atlanta, Ga.) took 33rd in the Division I senior women's saber competition.
The St. John's fencing teams return to match competition on Saturday, January 24 at Penn State, competing against the host Nittany Lions, Penn, Duke and North Carolina. Both teams are 3-0.
