St. John's Fencing Continues Winning Ways at NYU Invite

New York, N.Y. -- The St. John's University men's and women's fencing teams continued their winning ways on Sunday at the New York University Invitational in lower Manhattan.
The Red Storm men's team improved to 9-0 overall, sweeping matches against national power Ohio State, Notre Dame and host NYU. The women split four matches, beating NYU and Yale, and losing to Notre Dame and Ohio State. The Red Storm women's team now stands at 7-2 overall.
In men's action, St. John's topped Ohio State, 15-12, handing the Buckeyes their first loss of the season. The Red Storm won the saber, 6-3, and the epee, 5-4, but lost the foil, 5-4. Against Notre Dame, the Red Storm posted an 18-9 win, winning all three weapons by scores of 6-3. St. John's posted a 22-5 win over NYU, winning the saber and the epee, 7-2, respectively, and the foil, 8-1.
Sophomore Sergey Isayenko (Cherkassy, Ukraine) won all nine of his bouts on the day in the saber, while senior Darrin Whitmer (Detroit, Mich.) went 8-1. Sophomore Nitai Kfir (Simtat Haveredy, Israel) won seven of nine bouts in the foil, and junior Arpad Horvath (Budapest, Hungary) won six of seven bouts in the epee.
In women's action, St. John's beat NYU, 17-10, taking the saber, 8-1; and the foil and epee, 7-2, respectively; and beat Yale, 14-13, taking the saber, 9-0, and losing the foil, 5-4, and the epee, 8-1. The Red Storm lost matches to Notre Dame (18-9) and Ohio State (17-10).
The women's saber team of juniors Christina Crane (Madison, Ga.) and Julia Gelman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore Kasia Wieronski (Warren, N.J.) led, the way, winning 27 of 36 matches. Gelman finished the day 10-2, while Wieronski went 9-3 and Crane was 8-4. Freshman Amy Delahanty (Louisville, Ky.) led the foil, posting a 10-2 record.
St. John's returns to action on Saturday, January 31, competing against Columbia, Princeton and Rutgers at Columbia to close out the regular season schedule.
