St. John's Women's Fencing Closes Out Regular Season

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The St. John's men's fencing team closed out its first perfect regular season in five years with a trio of wins at Columbia on Saturday afternoon, while the women's team dropped two of three bouts.
The matches at Columbia - against Columbia, Princeton and Rutgers - close out the 2003-04 regular season for the Red Storm.
The St. John's men closed out the regular season with a 16-0 record after sweeping the afternoon matches, its first perfect season since the 1999-2000 season. The women's team finished the campaign with an 10-6 mark.
The men's team posted wins of 16-11 over Columbia, 22-5 over Rutgers and 15-12 over Princeton. The red Storm's foil team - sophomore Nitai Kfir (Simtat Haveredy, Israel) and freshmen Henry Kennard (Concord, Mass.) and Sam Wunderlich (Louisville, Ky.) - combined to win 19 of 27 bouts on the day. The saber and epee teams both won 17 of 27 bouts.
Kfir, the runner-up at the 2003 NCAA Championships, went 9-0 on the day, while Kennard and Wunderlich each won five of nine bouts.
Sophomore Sergey Isayenko (Cherkassy, Ukraine) won all nine of his bouts on the day in the saber, while senior Darrin Whitmer (Detroit, Mich.) went 8-1. Junior Arpad Horvath (Budapest, Hungary) won all nine of his bouts in the epee.
In women's action, St. John's lost to Columbia (17-10) and Princeton (15-12), and won against Rutgers (18-9). The Red Storm women were led by the saber team - juniors Christina Crane (Madison, Ga.) and Julia Gelman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore Kasia Wieronski (Warren, N.J.) - who won 21 of 27 bouts. The foil team won 16 of 27 bouts.
Gelman went 8-1 to lead the way, while Crane won seven of nine bouts and Wieronski won six of nine bouts. Freshman Amy Delahanty (Louisville, Ky.) won led, the way, winning 27 of 36 matches. Gelman finished the day 10-2, while Wieronski went 9-3 and Crane was 8-4. Freshman Erzsebet Garay (Budapest, Hungary) and classmate Amy Delahanty (Louisville, Ky.) led the foil, winning eight and seven of nine bouts, respectively.
St. John's will return to action on March 14, competing at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships in New York.
