April 20, 2004, Queens, N.Y. -- St. John's head men's basketball coach Norm Roberts today named Glenn Braica as an assistant coach for his new staff effective immediately. Braica (pronounced Brake-a) roamed the St. Francis College (N.Y.) sidelines in Brooklyn last season as an Associate Head Coach for Ron Ganulin's staff.
"We're fortunate to get an assistant the quality of Glenn to join our staff," Roberts said. "I played college basketball with him at Queens College. He's a fierce competitor and will bring those same qualities to St. John's as an assistant. Glenn and I are New Yorkers and we know the basketball community will embrace us in making in-roads on the recruiting trail to get St. John's back on top."
St. Francis College finished the Northeast Conference (NEC) as 2003-04 regular season co-champions with Monmouth finishing with a 12-6 mark. The Terriers also had an impressive 8-4 mark at home in finishing the year at 15-13 and have amassed the best record among NEC schools the past eight years overall.
Braica, 39, has been extremely successful in recruiting circles in his tenure at St. Francis College placing numerous All-NEC League players on the Terriers roster.
"Glenn comes highly recommended from the basketball community and his extensive ties to the Metropolitan Area high schools will be a tremendous asset to St. John's Basketball," said David C. Wegrzyn, Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Athletics at St. John's.
He attended St. Agnes High School and Bishop Ford Central Catholic in Brooklyn in the early 80's. His coaching career blossomed at New York City Tech as an assistant in 1988. Braica also served as teacher at The Reece School and The New York Board of Education (District 30) school system from 1989-1994.
Braica, a Brooklyn native, played with Roberts on the men's basketball team at Queens College from 1984-1988 where the two became fast friends. They have continued there friendship through the years and Roberts's first call in his new position was to Braica.
"He's the first person I thought of for the job," Roberts added. "Glenn deserves it and will be a valued assistant who brings a wealth of experience to St. John's and the BIG EAST Conference."
Roberts still has the remainder of his staff to hire and St. John's will announce those details as they become available.
