Persico-Smith, St. John's Captures 200th Win

Queens, NY (September 28, 2004) - Head coach Joanne Persico-Smith and the St. John's volleyball team captured their 200th program win tonight when they topped Iona 3-1 (30-25, 22-30, 30-22, 30-17) at Alumni Hall. The Red Storm, who are ranked fourth overall in the Northeast region, improve to 10-4 (0-0 BIG EAST), while the Gaels fall to 5-10.
St. John's was led by captains Jackie Ahlers (23 kills, .356 pct.) and Yana Ruban (14 kills, .357 pct.) while freshman setter Lisa Tedder notched 56 assists in the win.
In game one, the score was tied throughout the first several points with aggressive plays at the net from both teams. Freshman right side hitter, LaToya Blunt went 4 for 5, hitting .600 pct. to bring the Red Storm on top late in the game, winning 30-25.
Iona came out strong in game two, going on an early run led by Miki Hogg. Although the Red Storm quickly answered back at 17-17, the Gaels went on an impressive 11-1 run and stole game two, 30-22.
St. John's attacked game three with early kills by Ruban and Ahlers to bring the Red Storm on top 15-9. Iona made a late run with aggressive attacks at the net, but was stopped by libero Nicole Colaluca, who tallied a game-high 19 digs for St. John's who eventually took the game, 30-22.
Iona pulled off to a 4-0 lead in the fourth game with kills by senior Crystal Vasquez. St. John's responded, going on a 13-4 run with an unstoppable Ahlers attack at the net. Outside hitter Alicia Carmignani (12 kills, 9 digs) finished off the match with a kill, with the final score reading 30-17.
The Red Storm returns to action tomorrow when they will travel to Jersey City, NJ to face St. Peter's College. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
