WASHINGTON, D.C. - St. John's women's volleyball took a 3-0 victory over Georgetown Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena. The Red Storm was lead by Shameka Mitchell (Lakeland, Fla.) who recorded 11 kills and Anicia Wood (Wotton Terrace, Barbados) who had nine total blocks. The Red Storm improves to 20-7 overall, 6-4 in the BIG EAST, while Georgetown falls to 6-18 overall, 2-9 in the conference.
Freshmen Hui Ping Huang (The Republic of China), Casie Brooks (Victorville, Calif.) and Kathleen Yee (Honolulu, Hawaii) also stood out for St. John's. Huang recorded 9 kills and 12 digs, while Brooks had 18 assists and Yee had a match-high 14 digs.
Game one began with both teams tied through the eighth point. The Red Storm took an 11-2 run and jumped to a seven point lead off of kills from Huang and Mitchell. Strong blocking efforts from Wood and LaToya Blunt (Vacaville, Calif.) increased St. John's lead over the Georgetown to 22-10. St. John's took game one 30-15, hitting 27 percent to Georgetown's 10.
St. John's grabbed a four point lead in the beginning for the second game and never trailed, increasing the gap to eight, 13-5, off kills from Blunt and Wood. The Hoyas attempted to close the gap, coming within three several times but smart plays at the net from Caitlin Rimgaila (Trooper, Pa.) and Mitchell kept the Red Storm on top. The Red Storm finished game two 30-25 off a kill from Huang. St. John's out hit Georgetown 23 to 5 percent.
Leading two games to none, the Red Storm began game three with an eight point advantage over the Hoyas, 12-4. Three straight kills from Laura Sudano (East Setauket, N.Y.) added to St. John's control of the game, bringing the score to 18-6. The game is brought to a close at 30-19 on a service error from Georgetown.
The Red Storm returns to action on the road next weekend, playing Villanova on Friday, Nov. 4 and on Rutgers on Sunday, Nov. 6. First serve on Friday is 7 p.m., while Sunday's game begins at 2 p.m.
