Queens, N.Y. - On Tuesday, Oct. 4 student-athletes from all Red Storm varsity teams, including the cheerleading and dance teams, participated in the fourth-annual campus Fun Run. The walk around campus was established to promote awareness of St. John's University's annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walkathon.
"I feel that what we did today has a positive influence on the community," said Mercedes Dukes, a member of the women's basketball team. "It helps when you can get people out there and get the athletes involved. I'm glad we did this."
The Fun Run took place on the Queens campus during the University's common hour. The procession was led by a sign advertising the annual walkathon that will take place on Sunday, Oct. 16 on Queens Blvd. Student-athletes walked from the front of Carnesecca Arena, through the Residence Village, up the Vincentian Stairs to the Great Lawn and ended at the pink ribbon in front of Newman Hall. During the walk, student-athletes tied pink bows to trees along the route.
"As we were walking around, students were asking what we were doing and we told them about today and about the upcoming walk," said Andre Schmid, a member of the men's soccer team. "We were stopped several times. It's the little things like that and this event that gets the word out."
